July Birthstone - Ruby

17/07/2020

Ruby

Known as the “King of the Precious Stones” in Sanskrit, it is easy to see why the July birthstone has long since drawn the attention of people from all corners of the globe. Whether it is in Burma, where folklore dictates that a ruby can make someone completely invisible, China where a Mandarin’s rank is decided by the shade of ruby in his ring or the Land of Oz where Dorothy clicks her ruby slippers together to get her home, rubies have always radiated a magnetic charm.

Rubies come from the same corundum family as Sapphire and are a 9 on Mohs scale making them an ideal gemstone for any jewellery item. Corundum in its purest form is colourless however; the presence of chromium gives rubies their colour from orange to purplish red.  The most sought after shade of Ruby is called Pigeon Blood. Despite its gruesome name Pigeon Blood Rubies are a gorgeous deep pure red with a hint of bluish purple.

Any jewelry that carries a Ruby can signify passion and love between two people, which make this gemstone an ideal choice for a loved one in your life. Consumers may also be drawn to this lush colour because it is also said to signify wealth and success. And finally, Ruby is the birthstone for July, as well as a 15th and 40th wedding anniversary!
