March Birthstone - Aquamarine

02/03/2020

Coming from the Latin for “seawater”, Aquamarine is the beautiful blue birthstone for March. With colours ranging from strong dark blue to slightly greenish blue this gemstone looks wonderfully in an array of different settings from rings to earrings. With its sea blue appearance, aquamarine was said to calm the waters and keep sailors safe whilst at sea. It is also thought to enhance the happiness of marriages. This may be the reason behind why some celebrities have chosen to have the stone set into rings including Meghan Markle and Jessica Biel.

It is important to remember, however, that this gemstone has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on Mohs scale meaning it will not scratch easily but should also be worn with care. As well as being the March birthstone it can also be given as a gift for the 19th wedding anniversary.

As with diamonds we can also characterise Aquamarines into the 4 C’s:

Carat:the size of the stone is measured using carat weight the same as diamonds. One of the biggest Aquamarines ever found was in 1910, in Minas Gerais, Brazil and weighed 244 lbs!

Clarity: Most aquamarines are eye-clean meaning that there should be no inclusions visible to the naked eye. Some stones may contain liquid inclusions, however as a general rule most inclusions are few or absent in most finished gems.

Cut: Aquamarines can generally be cut into almost any shape however the most popular cuts include emerald, round and oval.                                                                                                                                            Stock Item Pictured, stock ref : 9039

Colour: The blue hues in Aquamarine are from trace amounts of ferrous iron. Its preferred colours range from moderately strong dark blue to slightly greenish blue. Aquamarine belongs to the Beryl family of gemstones and is the twinned with emerald. (Emerald is the green to bluish green variety of the same gemstone family.)

Taking all of this into consideration, I can’t think of a reason why someone with a March birthday shouldn’t own this beautiful aquamarine gemstone.
